Cross-Cultural Communication Workshop
Duration
6 hours
Delivery
In-person
Location

The Cross-Cultural Communication Workshop is a one-day professional development course designed to build confidence and capability in communicating across cultures within healthcare settings.
As Aotearoa New Zealand becomes increasingly culturally, linguistically, and religiously diverse, the ability to communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds is more important than ever. In healthcare, cultural competence is essential — misunderstandings or unintended offence can impact patient safety, trust, and health outcomes.
Through practical strategies, guided discussion, and real-world case studies, this workshop helps healthcare professionals strengthen their intercultural competence, challenge unconscious biases, and develop the communication skills needed to provide inclusive, patient-centred care.
This workshop focuses on:
Cultural Humility
Develop the communication skills needed to embrace cultural humility in healthcare,
forming a foundation for overcoming potential barriers with patients and colleagues.
Communication Strategies
Engage with key communicative approaches, including personal perception, non-verbal communication, effective questioning, and active listening.
Case Studies and Practical Application
Practice these strategies in small groups through real-world case studies and interactive tasks. Participants will unpack their own cultural assumptions and develop skills to better understand and work with people different from themselves.
Resources for Ongoing Learning
Participants will receive additional reading resources to support further learning and professional development.
