If you’ve ever thought about joining the New Zealand Police, Fire and Emergency, Defence Force, or another uniformed service — but weren’t sure where to start — this Level 2 course is perfect for you. It’s hands-on, challenging, and built to help you grow the mindset and skills needed to serve your community with pride. You’ll develop resilience, discipline, and leadership in a whānau-like environment where your potential is backed every step of the way. Alongside learning practical skills like emergency response, fitness, and basic military protocols, you’ll also take part in a collaborative community project, putting your training into action and making a real-world impact.
The aim of this course is to provide ākonga with an understanding of Hauora (well-being) principles and practices, empowering them to promote and maintain holistic well-being in various aspects of their lives.
To empower ākonga to develop informed personalised pathways for their future education, career, and personal development.
The course aim is for ākonga to gain knowledge of civil defence in emergency, leadership skills, survival techniques, basic military skills and etiquette as applicable to uniformed services in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Open to students who are 16 - 24 years of age, under Youth Guarantee
- Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake the Programme which is taught and assessed in English.
- Develop personal pathways for education, career, and self-development, making informed decisions about their future.
- Apply knowledge of civil defence, emergency response, and survival techniques relevant to uniformed services in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and discipline through practical training and collaborative challenges.
- Plan, scope, and implement a community project, using problem-solving skills and working effectively with others.
- Apply Hauora principles to support and maintain their own holistic wellbeing and that of their peers.
Develop the discipline for a career in uniform
This programme helps you map out a future that feels right for you — whether that’s entering training for Police, Fire and Emergency, Defence Force, or continuing your studies. You’ll gain practical skills through Basic Training, where you’ll learn civil defence, leadership, survival techniques, and the discipline expected in uniformed services. You’ll also work on a collaborative community project, where you’ll problem-solve and lead with others — just like in the real world. With support from tutors and a strong focus on your personal growth, you’ll leave with a clearer career pathway and the tools to take your next step with purpose.
