One in four New Zealanders have some form of disability, whether it is physical, psychological, or sensory. Pursue your passion for helping this part of our population and study this Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 4) to specialise in disability support or mental health and addiction support with this certificate. Learn the responsibilities of support workers and how they care for their patients’ mental health or disability challenges, and their families. Graduates will be prepared for entry-level roles in a mental health facility and an addiction or disability support organisation across New Zealand.
Learners will study the following seven courses (120 credits) over two semesters or one academic year.
Advocate for individuals and families in social support settings, emphasising culturally sensitive, cross-cultural, and person-centered communication.
Explore Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Māori cultural principles to address health disparities in New Zealand.
Develop leadership styles, teamwork, communication, and reflective practices, including Hauora Māori’s four dimensions.
Learn professionalism in healthcare settings, including healthcare ethics, codes of practice, whanau collaboration, and regulatory standards.
Gain practical experience in disability support, emphasising professionalism, communication, and autonomy-enhancing tools.
- For Domestic Students:
- At least 4 years of secondary school education.
- Level 1 NCEA credits in at least two subjects; OR
- A pass in at least 2 School Certificate subjects, OR
- A New Zealand Certificate in a relevant discipline at either Level 2 or Level 3, or equivalent
- A compulsory criminal record/Police check.
- For International Students:
- Completion of an overseas high school diploma.
Language Requirements:
- An IELTS academic score of 5.5 with no band less than 5.0 or NZCEL Level 3 (Applied) or equivalent.
- Apply culturally responsive and person-centred approaches when supporting individuals, whānau, and communities.
- Integrate Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori principles into practice, using culturally inclusive strategies to promote equity and improve wellbeing outcomes.
- Demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and ethical conduct in all aspects of health and wellbeing work, adhering to codes of practice, workplace policies, and quality standards.
- Support and empower individuals with mental health, addiction, or disability needs by applying effective communication, advocacy, and practical support strategies that enhance independence and dignity.
- Reflect on and develop leadership and self-care skills to maintain personal wellbeing, contribute to team effectiveness, and model safe, supportive behaviour in the workplace.
After completion of this qualification, you are entitled to Pay Equity Level 4: $28.25 p/h
Gain expert knowledge in your chosen speciality
No matter which strand you choose — Disability Support or Mental Health and Addiction Support — you’ll complete 200 hours of work placement in a healthcare or community setting, gaining valuable hands-on experience and deep insight into your chosen field. Each strand is designed to immerse you in the responsibilities, practices, and challenges of real-world support work. Graduates of this Health and Wellbeing (Level 4) programme are well-prepared for roles such as Residential Support Worker, Addiction Programme Facilitator, Day Programme Facilitator, Disability Information Consultant, or Case Worker.
