The NZ Certificate in Pharmacy – Pharmacy Technician Core (Level 4) programme is designed to prepare students for a vital role in New Zealand’s healthcare system as qualified pharmacy technicians. You’ll gain the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and ethical understanding needed to safely dispense medicines, support patients, and manage pharmacy operations under the supervision of a pharmacist. With a strong focus on compassionate care, you’ll learn in a purpose-built dispensary lab at NZSE College and build real-world experience through pharmacy work placements in community and hospital settings. Graduates will be ready to step confidently into pharmacy roles, contributing to the wellbeing of patients and their whānau.

PHAR4001 – Pharmacy Ethics, Regulations, and Legislation

The aim of this course is for students to gain the required knowledge of pharmacy-related legislation and regulations as applicable to a pharmacy technician. This course will also equip students with the skills and knowledge required to work ethically and professionally as a pharmacy technician.

PHAR4002 – Pharmacotherapy, Patient Counselling and Guidance

The aim of this course is for students to develop sound knowledge of pharmacotherapy in relation to commonly used treatments. The students will be able to develop a set of appropriate communication techniques when informing, advising, and counselling patients/customers on health-related matters and dispensed medicines.

PHAR4003 – Pharmacy Calculations

The aim of this course is to equip students with all the required knowledge to interpret prescriptions and perform all required calculations as a part of a dispensing process.

PHAR4004 – Pharmacy Placement ONE (1st Practicum)

The aim of this course is for students to develop a competent set of dispensing skills, including prescription data entry, compliance packaging and reconstitution of medicines while working under the supervision of a pharmacist.

PHAR4005 – Pharmacy Placement TWO (2nd Practicum)

The aim of this course is for students to develop a competent set of dispensing skills, including prescription data entry, compliance packaging and reconstitution of medicines while working under the supervision of a pharmacist. The course will equip students with the knowledge and skills required for the effective management of dispensary stock and inventory while fulfilling storage requirements.

You’ll build confidence through hands-on training in NZSE College’s on-campus mock dispensary lab, where you can practise your skills in a safe, supportive environment. At the end of the NZ Certificate in Pharmacy – Pharmacy Technician Core (Level 4), you’ll complete 160 hours of work placement in a pharmacy, gaining real-world experience and insight into daily pharmacy operations. Graduates will be well-prepared to support pharmacists in delivering high-quality healthcare and ensuring the safe and effective use of medicines. Career opportunities include roles such as Pharmacy Technician, Hospital Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy Assistant, or Dispensary Assistant.
